TODAY'S GREEN MANTRA: I'm gonna learn a thing or two about the food I eat because I value my health, the planet and all her inhabitants.

Day 24 / 365

"Your body is your temple" is what they seem to say, and its true. You decide, for the most part, who and what enters it, how, and when. That said, there are still some sucky substances that sneak in through the pores without your knowledge, whether it be the toxins in your beauty products, the pollutives in the air, or the chemical dyes which hide in the clothing next to your skin. When we eat, we think we're safe from the side effects of food production, but as it turns out, we are most definately not. Food is yet another sneaky subject which has a whole world of wonder and wickedness behind its creation that most of us don't know enough about.

Though I'm a huge fan of reading up on these intriguing subjects, I feel that the most joyous way to be lead down the yellow brick road to Greeoz, is through concise stories captured in documentary format which harness your appetite for discovery.

Here are the best docs I've seen which discuss the food industry in its various forms, from meat, fish and diary, to veggies and fruit, these five favs have you covered:

What's It About? Damn good documentary on the real cause of climate change. It is an eye opening and for some, life changing documentary which looks at the single most destructive industry on our planet, which is responsible for more greenhouse gasses than the transportation industry. This industry is Animal agriculture, which is the leading cause of deforestation, water consumption, pollution, rainforest destruction, species extinction, habitat loss, topsoil erosion and ocean "dead zones". It'll blow your god damn mind, especially when you learn that the subject has been purposefully avoided by environmental organizations due to fear. P.S Leonardo DiCaprio produced it, if bearded heartthrobs aid you at all in your decision making
Where To Watch It? You'll find it on their WEBSITE or on NETFLIX. You can also buy it on Amazon HERE

What's It About? This is one of the most visually poetic documentaries I’ve ever seen. It is by Yann Arthus-Bertrand who guides you, in the most serene and stunning way, through the harms we do to our planet through over fishing and pollution and shares solutions for reducing those harms. They've developed an app which is worth downloading which lets you know which fish, if any, are sustainable to eat.

What's It About? This is a lighthearted documentary, less sort of doom and gloom than the rest. It chronicles, in a simple, beautiful, funny, uplifting and informative way - sustainable solutions (already in place) to the problems we are having world wide. For those of you not sure how little it takes to secure our future or who want to feel inspired by Melanie Laurent and Cryil Dion's journey towards wisdom and discovery, this is for you (there is an English version too).
Where To Watch It? If the film isn't playing on your country, you can apply to do your own screening wherever you may be - if you're in France - I recommend you get yourself to the Cinema a.s.a.p (the trailer doesn't do it much justice) - if you're not in France, sign up for the release and they'll notify you when it is out.
What's It About? In the documentary Racing Extinction they suggest (with the help of scientists, environmentalists, artists , and engineers) that humans will be extinct over the next 100 years, with no one else to blame but ourselves. They also highlight, that in the next three years, if we allow the carbon levels to rise 3 degrees or more, species in the ocean (like turtles and sharks) will simply begin to disintegrate due to the rise in acidity that we’re already seeing in the ocean due to climate change. It is a bit scary but also completely inspiring, as we are, at this very moment, in a position to reverse our pending doom, should we all unite in action.

What's It About?(their words) Using hilarious and disturbing archival footage alongside interviews with farmers, scientists, government officials and activists, FED UP! presents an entertaining, informative and compelling overview of our current food production system from the Green Revolution to the Biotech Revolution and what we can do about it. FED UP! explores the unintentional effects of pesticides, the resistance of biotechnology companies to food labelling and the links between government officials and major biotechnology and chemical companies.

What's It About?(from their site) In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli—the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.
